In a nail-biting final, Sambalpur XI beat East Coast Railway- Visakhapatnam 4-3 to win the championship title of the Inter-State Knock-out Football Tournament 2018, organized by the Lanjigarh Unit of Vedanta Limited in association with Sibaram Yuvak Sangh at Chandanpur Playground today.
Kalahandi District Superintendent of Police B Gangadhar, who graced the closing ceremony as chief guest, gave away trophies and cash awards to the winners and runners-up teams in presence of Vedanta Lanjigarh COO Rakesh Mohan, Director (External Affairs) Sanjeev Kumar, Chief Community Development Officer Harmeet Sehra and PRI members of the locality.
The champions won the trophy and cash award of Rs 30,000 while the runners-up team was awarded with cash prize of Rs 20,000 and the trophy.
Bishnu was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ while Ganesh of Visakhapatnam teamwas declared ‘Goalkeeper of the Tournament’. Manoj Patra of Chandanpur team was awarded as ‘Best Defender of the Tournament’.
Speaking on the occasion, Gangadhar lauded Vedanta’s efforts to create and facilitate inspiring opportunities for sportsmen to showcase their talent and prowess.
Rakesh Mohan reiterated on Vedanta’s commitment in bringing the community together through sports.
Eight teams from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh participated in the week-long tournament.
A special exhibition match between women players of Jharsuguda and Sambalpur was held on December 7 to encourage girls to take up sports.
