Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik dedicated Gopalpur Port, a fair-weather deep draft port with the ability to simultaneously handle multiple vessels and diverse cargo, to the nation today.

Inaugurating the Port, Patnaik said, “Gopalpur Port will be a strategic shift in cargo movement on the east coast of India. Development of this port will provide significant economic benefits to Ganjam District and will create direct and indirect employment for over 6,500 people.”

“Gopalpur port will play a crucial role in economic development of Odisha, especially the southern districts of the state,” added the Chief Minister.

Speaking on the occasion, Shapoorji Pallonji Port’s Managing Director Amit Saboo said, “Gopalpur Port is expanding its capacity to 20 MT all-weather operations in this phase with an overall vision of 55 MT by 2025.” “Shapoorji Pallonji Groups’ ports business will now operate on both sides of the Indian coast providing strategic logistical advantages to its customers,” he added.

In 2017, Shapoorji Pallonji Group became major stakeholder in Gopalpur Port; and after the takeover Shapoorji Pallonji Group had undertaken an expansion project entailing an investment of Rs 2,000 crore to enhance the capacity to 20 million tonne.

“The current expansion entails a total investment of Rs. 2,000 crore and will contribute significantly towards the economic development of Odisha in general and Ganjam District in particular” said Gopalpur Port CEO Captain Sandeep Agarwal.

Gopalpur Port is expected to create a strategic shift in cargo movement pattern on the east coast of India because of its strategic location between two major ports, Paradip in the north and Visakhapatnam in the south.

State Commerce & Transport Minister Dr. Nrusingha Charan Sahu, Gopalpur MLA Dr. Pradeep Panigraphi and Chhattrapur MLA Dr. Priyanshu Pradhan were among others who graced the inaugural ceremony.
