Launch of five High Performance Centres transcends the sporting culture in Odisha

In a continuous bid to promote sports and sports culture within the state, the Odisha Government launched five High Performance Centres (HPCs) at Kalinga Stadium here today.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the HPCs in presence of eminent sports persons Anil Kumble, Pullela Gopichand and other dignitaries.

The five HPCs launched today included international level high-performing centers for Badminton by Dalmia Bharat & Pullela Gopichand Badminton Foundation; Athletics by Reliance Foundation, Athletics Federation of India and International Association of Athletics Federation; Weightlifting by KJS Ahluwalia & Tenvic Sports; Football development in the state by All India Football Federation & Odisha Sports Development & Promotion Company; and Sports Management by the XAVIER-EMLYON Business School & KJS Ahluwalia.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated the high performance sport climbing node at the Climbing Wall arena which will nurture and train youth in climbing with an objective to prepare them for international events. It will also promote mountaineering, sport climbing and allied adventure activities/sports at various levels within the state.

Patnaik also felicitated 162 outstanding sportspersons of the state with cash awards. The felicitation ceremony recognized the efforts and achievements of 162 players from different sports categories who bought accolades for the state with their remarkable performances throughout the year at different national events.

Para Badminton player Pramoda Bhagat got cash award of Rs. 70,00,000; while Para Athlete Jayanti Behera got Rs. 60,00,000; and Blind chess players Prachurya Kumar Pradhan and Soundarya Kumar Pradhan received Rs. 20,00,000 each.


Speaking about the launch, Patnaik said, “Today is a historic day for Odisha as a state that’s passionate about sports. We understand how beneficial the opening of these high-performance centers is to a sportsman as well as the nation. I am delighted to dedicate these centers to the sports loving people of Odisha, and I thank every one of you associated with this initiative and for joining us in the journey of making Odisha – the Sports destination of India”

Among others, Minister Sports and Youth Services Chandra Sarathi Behera, Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi, Development Commissioner Asit Kumar Tripathy, Secretary Sports and Youth Services Vishal K Dev, Director Sports and Youth Services R Vineel Krishna, Tenvic Sports Founder and eminent cricketer Anil Kumble and Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy Director of Training & Coaching Pullela Gopichand graced the occasion.
