Commuters facing trouble to go from one platform to another at small railway stations will now get relief as Indian Railways has planned to construct Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) with focus on passengers’ safety.

As per an East Coast Railway sources, these stations will also have high level and concrete platforms. FOBs are necessary in view of daily footfall of passengers at such stations. In view of the above, Cuttack and Jajpur Keonjhar Road Stations will have wider FOBs. The new FOBs at Cuttack and Jajpur Keonjhar Road Stations will be 6 metres wide.  The processes is already in motion at Bhubaneswar and Bhadrak railway stations on an experimental basis with target set to complete the project within six months-a record time for any FOB in Indian Railways. Work for these FOBs had started in December, 2017 and will be over by Rath Yatra, this year.

Earlier, Indian Railways had earlier given focus on Unmanned Level Crossings (UMLCs). In East Coast Railway jurisdiction, Khurda Road Railway Division is totally free from Unmanned Level Crossing Gates. All the UMLCs under Khurda Road Division have been closed by March, 2018. Waltair and Sambalpur Railway Divisions have been targeted to be free from UMLCs by July, 2018.

As UMLCs problem is getting due attention and importance, new focus is to ensure passengers’ safety at railway stations. Small railway stations including Passenger Halts (PHs) earlier received a lot of complaints of neglect. “These complaints will no longer be there. Occasionally, we get reports of people getting run over while crossing tracks. At many stations, people reportedly go under the Stationary Goods Trains to cross from one track to another”, said a railway official.

In view of the above, passengers now need not worry about crossing tracks to move from one platform to another.  Most of the small stations are passenger halts. This year, as sanction of works under powers of General Managers have been delegated by Railway Board and focus is on providing better passenger amenities and comfort to passengers, it is felt that small stations should now come in to the focus area.
