BHUBANESWAR: Private engineering colleges have urged the state government to open centres of excellence in different places to make engineering students industry-ready.The centres will have high-end training equipment and talented instructors to train the students on various practical engineering trades.

Members of Odisha Private Engineering College Association (OPECA) met governor Ganeshi Lal on Saturday and discussed the issue with him. The association said the establishment of such centres would help students get jobs in industries.

OPECA general secretary Binod Dash said private engineering colleges could not build the expensive centres on their own. “Private engineering colleges function under Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT). The university can set up these centres with the help of the state government,” he added.

An official said more than 26,000 engineering seats would remain vacant this year as students were not preferring to study in private engineering colleges. The centres would make the students employable and attract them towards engineering, he added.
Sunil Sarangi, the former director of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, said, “This is a good proposal. The centres of excellence should be established in a fair manner to cater to the needs of all colleges. We need talented human resource personnel to run the centres,” he added.
