The Odisha Government today urged the Union Government to name the newly constructed Jharsuguda Airport after legendary freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai.

Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi has written to Airports Authority of India (AAI) Chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra that the newly constructed airport, soon to be operationalized, should be named after the veteran freedom fighter.

While forwarding the copy of a letter of Bargarh MP Prabhas Kumar Singh to Mohapatra, Padhi said that Singh had represented to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in this regard.

The State Government has accepted the proposal of Singh; and the AAI should consider the proposal, the Chief Secretary urged the AAI Chief.

Singh had earlier sent a proposal to the Union Civil Aviation Minister and emphatically demanded naming of the airport in the name of Veer Surendra Sai.

He said in his letter that the Ministry should respect and respond to the growing demand among the masses.

The Chief Secretary said that naming Jharsuguda Airport in the name of the veteran freedom fighter will be a befitting tribute to the great son of the soil.
