No ST families in Odisha to be displaced due to Polavaram project: Oram

Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram today said no scheduled tribe families from Odisha would be displaced due to the Polavaram Dam project being constructed by Andhra Pradesh if the State government opts for construction of protective embankments.

Answering a question by Rajya Sabha MP D Raja in the upper house of Parliament, Oram said as per information received from the Polavaram Project Authority, Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and Water Resources Department, Government of Andhra Pradesh, a survey and census of the project affected families under Polavaram Irrigation Project was conducted during the year 2005-06 under the provisions of Section 16 of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. As per the data collected, while 17,444 scheduled tribe families will be affected due to the project in Andhra Pradesh, it would not affect any family in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
