Bhubaneswar, Jan 10

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the case of firing at its activist Manoranjan Meher’s house in Bargarh district recently.

The saffron party stated that it will conduct padayatra to protest the attack.  It   alleged that Bargarh SP B Jugal Kishore has become a puppet of the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).  The party leaders said stated the two persons arrested in the case of firing at saffron party activist Manoranjan Meher’s house have links with a leader from BJD. BJP spokesperson Sajjan Sharma told media persons, “The district police uttered the same words that the ruling party spokesperson had stated. When the probe is not over yet, how does the Bargarh SP know that the two arrested persons do not have political links? It seems Md Arshad and Sushant Bhoi, who were arrested in the firing case, have links with BJD”.

“As they (BJP) are finding it difficult to create a base in Bijepur, they are creating an issue out of nothing,” Deb added. Slamming both BJD and BJP, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) chief Prasad Harichandan raised concerns over fair polls in Bijepur on the backdrop of increasing cases of violence in the area.

He urged the Bargarh police and the district administration to create a conducive environment for free and fair bypoll in Bijepur. “Earlier, Congress had predicted of violence in Bijepur during the Gaisilat meeting which turned out to be true,” Harichandan stated.

Meanwhile, police today arrested the third accused in connection to the firing at the residence of Mandal President of BJP Yuba Morcha Manoranjan Meher at Pada village under Bijepur area in the district on Sunday evening. The arrested person has been identified as Krupasindhu Singh. He was arrested from a hotel in Sohela-Madhupur road in the district. The police said that Singh has five cases of criminal cases registered against him on different police stations.

Yesterday, the Bijepur police had arrested two persons- Sushant Bhuen and Arshat Khan from a roadside hotel at Loharchati on the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border and produced them in the court in connection with the incident.

Significantly, both the ruling BJD and BJP have been eyeballing each other ahead of the Bijepur bye-poll and the incident has triggered tension in the Assembly segment. Bijepur Assembly seat had fallen vacant after three -time Congress MLA Subal Sahu passed away on August 22, 2017 following a prolonged illness.
